Pangbourne Meadow: Perfect for Kayaking, Paddleboarding & Picnics by the Thames

We’re always on the lookout for a good spot to spread out a picnic blanket, let the kids run wild, and free access to the water for paddleboards. Pangbourne Meadow ticks all the boxes for a chilled, outdoorsy day out in Berkshire and easily reached from South Oxfordshire too.

Pangbourne Meadow has that proper lazy Sunday feel. Wide open green space, huge old trees offering dappled shade, and that blissful Thames-side breeze that makes you feel like you’re miles from anywhere, well until the train goes past!

Families, dog walkers, and paddleboarders all seem to coexist happily here. It’s relaxed, it’s spacious, and there’s room for everyone without feeling like you’re sitting on your neighbour’s picnic rug.

Easy Water Access

Now let’s talk water. If you’re into SUPs, kayaks, or just fancy a splash around with the kids, Pangbourne Meadow is a bit of a hidden gem. There are a couple of gentle, sloping access points just a short walk from Adventure Dolphin that makes getting in and out of the river super easy – none of that awkward scramble down muddy edges while trying to keep your dignity intact.

You’ll often spot people launching paddleboards straight from the meadow, while others mooch along the river in canoes, or simply bob about enjoying the view.

Tip: Go early on sunny weekends – it can get busy with fellow water lovers and the car park is small.

Picnic Perfection

There’s plenty of space to spread out and set up your picnic rug for the day Bring your blankets, fold-up chairs, frisbees, and definitely a cool box full of treats.

I don’t know if they’re always there but when we visited there was also a coffee & ice cream van at Adventure Dolphin centre. And if you forget anything (or fancy a pub lunch instead), Pangbourne village is just a short stroll away. Think cafes, pubs, and a few handy shops for snacks or emergency suncream runs.

Pangbourne Meadow Parking

There’s a pay and display car park (Pangbourne River Meadow Car Park) right by the entrance, so no epic hikes with armfuls of picnic gear required but it’s fairly small and fills up quickly on a busy weekend.

If you’re after a low-effort, high-reward day out with nature, water, and lashings of picnic potential, Pangbourne Meadow is absolutely worth popping on your summer hit list.

Pack the paddleboard, grab the kids, and go have some splashy fun!
