Grama’s Best Irish Soda Bread Recipe

I have Irish parents and grew up with a love of wonderful recipes handed down through the family.  Many of my fond childhood memories involve freshly baked Irish soda bread with a thick slathering of homemade raspberry jam.

Irish soda bread is a quick and easy recipe without the hassle of other breads as you don’t need to let it rise.  It’s a great bread recipe to make with kids.

Irish Soda Bread Ingredients:

  • 350g plain flour
  • 1.5  teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 285ml milk plus 1 tablespoon vinegar or lemon juice
  • You can also replace the milk and vinegar combo with half milk plus half yogurt

Traditionally Irish soda bread is made using buttermilk but it’s not always easy to come by. This recipe is a perfect soda bread recipe with no buttermilk.

How to Make Irish Soda Bread

  • Preheat oven to 160c fan or 180c non fan.
  • Mix the dry ingredients together.
  • Add the liquid (milk mixture) gradually.  Depending on the flour it might need a little bit more or less.
  • Line a baking tray with non stick paper or use a nonstick try.
  • Turn the soda bread mixture onto the tin, making a thick round shape.
  • Cut a deep cross on the top, this is really important to ensure the centre cooks evenly.
  • Bake in the oven for around 30mins.
